The villa was built in 1787 on the site of a pre-existing Franciscan monastery.
At the beginning of the 20th century,
the property fell into a state of abandonment until it was purchased by the explorer Guido Monzino. He wanted to create a national center for geographical research. He died, leaving it to the Italian Environment Fund.
