The villa dates back to 1720, and in 1877 it was purchased by the Vitali family of Milanese Jews. It later passed to the American Heinz family, the king of ketchup, where it became the venue for important literary gatherings known as "como conversations."

In 2004, it was purchased by George Clooney, the current owner.
